A wise man once said to me that there three certainties in life TAX, DEATH and CHANGE. John F. Kennedy once said that "Change is the law of life, and those who only look to the past or present are certain to miss the future"
Considering a change that will at some point impact on your livelihood and the security of dependants of course is no easy decision. Often people starting out in a Home Based business will put one 'toe in the water first' and establish their alternative income part time from home, before surrendering their pay check for the final time and making a fast track exit from the Rat Race. Makes sense!
The first decision with any home based business opportunity is to separate the fictional operators from the legitimate and proven businesses. We don't have to surf too far at any time on the internet to discover some extraordinary claims, from a group of 'some ones' about the next big thing and instant wealth. Hey if only it was that easy the Rat Race would have been abandoned and forgotten by everyone some time ago!
I suggest that the first decision that any decided Home Base operator should seriously consider is finding a business match that fits with their skill set, operating culture, desired income and passion. YES PASSION - if you have navigated that one way crossing across the 'bridge of change' you would want to be very comfortable that your new enterprise is something that excites you not only during that initial honeymoon period but every month and year that follows.
Remember crossing the bridge of 'change' is typically a one-way journey!
Once you have identified a business opportunity that is a match for your skills, your budget, your interests and PASSION, a tick list like this would apply:
- The opportunity is a part of a growth industry in multiple markets
- The opportunity is proven to work and is supported by proven business systems - intellectual property
- Incomes claims by 'Sponsors' and existing operators can be validated
- The opportunity is managed by a credentialed leadership team that are accessible - and not simply by email or 'support tickets'
- The business is a genuine business, the entity is a registered & bonafide
- No mystery payments are requested by strangers
- Discovery of operator attrition and success rates
Next comes a willingness to learn and an Entrepreneurs mind set. More on that in my next post.
